It was just a typical Saturday morning at the Palmer house. While most people were sleeping in, watching tv or running errands, I got to Domonique’s house to find her in her workshop assembling new flower arrangements while her husband Jeff was working away making hand-crafted leather purses for their new floral and leather business Ali & Ivy.

These two are quite the duo! I knew Domonique was awesome right away when we met and found out that we’re wedding twins! We got married on the same day last year (September 16th for the win!) and found out our weddings had a ton of similarities- like how we both had our grandmas as our flower girls and how we both did a wine box time-capsule as our unity ceremony.

Get to know Domonique and her amazing business Ali & Ivy and see if her gorgeous wood bouquets would be a good fit for your wedding florals. I really wanted a bouquet like this for my wedding but there were very few options, especially ones that had good reviews. I am so excited to welcome her business to the local wedding community! And if you’re not from Minnesota, no worries! She can work with you virtually and ship your flowers.

Tell me a little bit about your business, your background and how you got started.
I have always been a crafty person and have been encouraged by friends and family to sell what I make but starting a business seemed like a lot of work! When my husband and I were planning our wedding, we knew we were going to do a lot of DIY. I had heard of wood flowers and decided I wanted to make my own wedding flowers. I fell completely in love with wood flowers.
After the wedding excitement settled down, I continued to play around with wood flowers and knew I had found something I was passionate about and decided to make a go at starting a business. My husband also had been playing around with leather work and decided it was something we both had a lot of interest in. He made our gifts for our wedding party, including personalized hand-stitched leather purses which were a hit.
Where do you find inspiration for your work?
I love the creativity you can have making flowers. They can be made out of story book pages, maps, photos, fabric, or anything else meaningful to you. Just like with ‘real’ flowers, colors have meaning and you can create a feeling with flowers. I also like to branch out and try different styles that match other people’s themes and visions.
What makes Ali & Ivy stand out from the crowd?
The flowers are so unique, they last forever and they can be very customized. Spending money on wedding flowers is something a lot of brides have a hard time with. These flowers don’t die, they don’t go out of season, they can be made in any color you want, and then after the wedding, they can become decorations in your home or double as a gift for the people who helped with your wedding day!
I’ve also started using a photo of someone’s real wedding bouquet and replicating it with wood flowers for them to have as a keepsake.

What can clients expect in their experience with you?
One-on-one experience, personalized flower bouquets and arrangements. They can expect someone who is excited about what they’re doing and wants to make your vision come to life.
What advice do you have for couples when it comes to planning out the flowers for their day?
Don’t feel like you have to follow any rules- you don’t have to stick to one or two  colors or a certain theme.

I absolutely adore this flowing bouquet! It’s so stunning and unique!

What are some things couples should consider when looking for a florist?
When picking any vendors for your wedding, you need to have chemistry. Planning a wedding is stressful and you don’t need a vendor who adds to your stress! Look for someone who fits your personality, someone who you can work with easily, and someone who will work hard to make your vision come to life.
Why should couples consider an alternative to real flowers?
They last forever, they can be gifted and saved afterwards. They have more flexibility with colors and styles. They can be personalized. They never go out of season. You can use things that are meaningful to you like your favorite book or your grandma’s brooch. They look beautiful in photos. They are comparable in price to real flowers but there are ways to make your money back. You can use them to decorate your home afterwards, gift them to your wedding party or others helping with your big day, or even re-sell them to a future bride (but I would definitely suggest you keep your bridal bouquet for yourself!)

In addition to flowers for your wedding and home, Ali & Ivy also makes custom leather purses, wallets and luggage tags. They make awesome wedding party gifts that are practical and that your friends will use long after the wedding is over! I’m all for gifts that have meaning and useful rather than just giving a trinket for the sake of giving a gift because you’re supposed to.
