In-home sessions are ideal for newborns, families and couples as can lead to amazingly authentic photos!
You’ll be so comfortable and it’ll reflect in the photos.
“In the comfort of your own home” is a saying for a reason. Home is where we spend most of our time and it’s familiar and comforting. You’re not trying to adjust to new surrounding when you do photos in your home. Getting your photo taken can be an intimidating experience to begin with so why do it in the place you are most yourself and most comfortable?
The photos will be a true reflection of this point of your life that you’ll love to look back on.
Whether you’re engaged, welcoming a baby into your life or you want some casual family photos, in-home sessions are wonderful for capturing photos that are true to you. What does a normal day at home look like for you? Do you love to play board games? Cook together? Netflix and chill? Cuddle? Incorporate what you love into your photos!
You can take your time and don’t have to rush through the session.
I used to work at a Target portrait studio. Remember those? I don’t think they’re around anymore. I worked in a small 10×10 room and the portrait appointments were 10 minutes. Literally 10 minutes. Families and couples would rush in, frantically try to get everyone in order quickly and force a smile for a couple posed shots.
Nothing about this process was natural or relaxed, and it made it really hard to capture authentic portraits that brought out true personalities. When the photos are in your own home, there’s no time constraints and you can relax so you don’t look back at the photos and think, “Man, remember how stressful that was?!”
In home sessions are good for any kind of weather, including long Minnesota winters.
Outdoor, winter sessions or summer rainy sessions can actually be really fun and adventurous if you are up for it and it’s not a billion degrees below zero, but in-home sessions offer a great alternative that you can do any time of year without getting wet or frost-bitten.
You can dress comfy and it’ll look awesome!
Break out your cozy sweaters, casual dresses, flannel or comfy jeans. No need to wear a ball gown here because how often do you wander around your house like that?
These photos are meant to be authentic and true to your personalities so wear what you’d normally wear around the house or a slight step up from that. Personally, I wouldn’t want to be photographed in the baggy sweatpants and sweatshirt without a bra (let’s be real!) that I sometimes wear around the house, but my favorite jeans and sweater or simple dress makes sense and isn’t out of the norm for me.
I know what you’re thinking. Your house needs a lot of work and doesn’t look like you want it to. And it can get messy sometimes…. Totally fine! That’s all of us. Even the people who have gorgeous houses that look like they’re straight off a Pinterest board feel that way too! I’ve photographed them 🙂
My house is old. It was built in the 50s and when Tony and I first moved in, I had grand visions for how awesome it would look once all of our magical renovations were done.
I’m a visual person and I could picture all of the changes I wanted to make including painting, ripping out the crazy pink and green carpets, knocking down walls, changing the cabinets and counter tops and flooring… the list goes on forever.
I’ve never been a huge HGTV fan but I’ve seen enough to know that there are so many options to take your house from drab and boring to something out of a magazine.
However, I had never actually owned a home before and had no idea how much time and effort it took just to make sure it stays halfway clean and organized, let alone how much time and money it would take to make all of the huge changes I had pictured.
All of that to say, I know it can feel intimidating and vulnerable to invite a professional photographer into your personal space to have your life there photographed if your house isn’t exactly what you want it to be.
But the ugly hand-me-down couch in our living room is where Tony, Kyle and I spend our nights working, chatting, eating dinner, watching Netflix and catching up from our days. It’s not pretty but it’s where our lives are at right now and why wouldn’t I want to remember that?
Just clean it up the best you can, break out all of your favorite decor and try to get rid of any unnecessary clutter that would be distracting in the photos and you’re golden!
Check out this fun in-home adventure session I did of Charlie and Jenna to welcome in their sweet baby girl Ella!
If they look familiar, it’s because they are a Lumos Couple from a couple years back! I adore staying in touch with Lumos Couples and getting to photograph new milestones in their lives.
If you look at the last photo, we actually recreated one of their engagement photos and included their new family member this time around! So sweet!
